Introduction

The purpose of this book is to introduce a "new" phenomenon. It is not really new. I suspect it has been occurring to people throughout time. It may very well have occurred to you. However, defining its structure and characteristics, so it can be noticed, distinguished from related phenomena, and used—that's new.

Stories of this phenomenon can occasionally be found in books on synchronicity or coincidence. Indeed, if it occurs in our own lives, we probably think of it that way, if we notice it at all. However, if we could scratch beneath the surface of one of the head-turning coincidences we experience, and knew what we were looking for, we might find far more than meets the eye. We might find a phenomenon that has an astonishingly intricate design and seems to be offering wise counsel on a situation in our lives.

I have come to believe that this phenomenon has tremendous significance. That is why, after more than thirty years of private use and investigation, I have decided to share what I have learned in the form of this book. In my experience, this phenomenon can provide invaluable guidance for our lives; and what's more, it could potentially change our understanding of reality. It is endlessly fascinating.

The first half of the book (through Chapter 6) is devoted to learning what this phenomenon is and how we can make use of it in our own lives. These chapters (especially Chapters 3-6) are trying to teach us a new and unfamiliar concept. They therefore contain a good deal of explanation, but this is balanced out by examples, including a cameo story at the beginning of each chapter, and by practical exercises.

Once we have gained an understanding of what the phenomenon is, the following chapters are mainly devoted to exploring the nature of the guidance it offers. Can it predict the future? Can it see deeply into situations and people? What is its philosophy? We will explore these questions by looking at dozens of real-life examples.

Then, in the final chapter, I explore possible explanations of where it comes from and offer the conclusions I have reached.

Even though the subtitle of the book mentions "God's plan," aside from brief references in the book, for most of the book I am going to leave the God issue aside, reserving it for the final chapter. This is not a phenomenon that presumes belief in God. It is a phenomenon in its own right. It just happens, without the need for any cooperation from us. And it happens to people regardless of their belief in God. What I want us to do, therefore, is learn about it the way we would learn about any natural phenomenon: first observe it as an event and learn its characteristics, and only then turn our attention to speculation about its ultimate nature.
