Sign Tip: If you are sure you have had a CMPE—if you have two events that are independent yet somehow share a long list of commonalities—then look around that same time frame for a possible third event. Many CMPEs—about a third of them—have three or more events. So don't mentally close the books with two events. There might be another event (or even more) and it might hold the key to the meaning of the CMPE.

This book is teaching us how."
From the Foreword by Barbara Harris Whitfield
The concept presented here is a whole new way of approaching events in our lives that seem coincidental or "meant to be," events that seem to be telling us something. A "sign" or CMPE (Conjunction of Meaningfully Parallel Events) is a coincidental occurrence that not only seems incredibly improbable, but also fits a detailed model. You might think of it as an extreme form of synchronicity or coincidence, a kind of super-synchronicity.
To qualify as a sign (in the special sense used here), there must be two independent events that occur within hours of each other and that share a long list of objective similarities, or parallels. These parallels need to come together to create a whole picture, a picture that in turn serves as commentary on a situation in one's life (the life of the person to whom the sign occurred). It frames the situation in a certain way and in so doing addresses concerns about it. (To see a sample sign, click here.)
This model has coalesced out of the investigation of hundreds of such occurrences spanning over thirty years by Robert Perry. Best known for his work with the modern spiritual classic A Course in Miracles, Robert has had a private preoccupation with this phenomenon since age sixteen. In recent years, the model reached sufficient completion to share it with others in the form of a book, which is entitled Signs: A New Approach to Coincidence, Synchronicity, Guidance, Life Purpose, and God's Plan.
CMPEs can comment on anything, but tend to revisit the same situations again and again, with each new sign adding a piece to an ever-expanding vision of that particular situation. This vision is not only remarkably consistent from sign to sign, it yields an especially high quality of guidance. CMPEs seem to contain a real depth of wisdom and insight, and can even make accurate predictions and offer practical advice. In the author's experience, they are the most effective form of personal guidance available. Their advice not only tends to prove extremely helpful, it also seems to come from outside one's personal expectations and biases.
Another benefit of this phenomenon is that it can be empirically investigated. After all, a CMPE consists of publicly observable events that have so much in common that their chance convergence seems highly improbable. This improbability grows as further CMPEs come that are intimately linked to and consistent with the first. As such, the scientific investigation of this phenomenon could help penetrate the mystery of synchronicity and even expand our view of reality. Here is what Bruce Greyson, one of the founders of research into near-death experiences, says about them and about Perry's book:
Robert Perry's detailed model for identifying meaningful coincidences allows us for the first time to get a firm grasp on the concept of synchronicity. Reframing these personal experiences as publicly observable events honors their subjective spiritual significance while also bringing scientific rigor to our study and interpretation of them. Whether or not you believe that a higher intelligence speaks to us in signs, Perry's book will change how you listen.
